Sam Selou Wazi
Sam Selou Wazi was born in Nineveh, Iraq, and grew up in Baghdad. In 1977, he left Iraq to pursue his passion for art, first traveling to Europe and later immigrating to the United States in 1979. Despite limited English skills, he realized his dream of studying art at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan, where he discovered a deep love for painting and sculpture.
Among his most notable accomplishments is the full-sized statue of William Ballenger, founder of The Buick Company, now permanently displayed in Ballenger Park. He also created a statue for the Catholic Church in Detroit to honor one of the Saints and produced two sculptures of ancient Babylonian art that are housed at the Chaldean Cultural Center in West Bloomfield, Michigan. His published work has been featured in The Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936–1937: Witnesses and Warriors, and his pieces are held in several private collections.
For more than 40 years, Sam has lived in the Flint area, painting, sculpting, and producing abstract woodwork. With numerous gallery exhibitions across the United States, he continues to refine his art and contribute to the cultural life of his community.
